MSC Cruises orders two revolutionary ships occupancy

Fast-growing MSC Cruises today ordered two new ships that it says will have a revolutionary new design.

The 154,000-ton vessels to be constructed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri will feature innovative sea-level promenades with outdoor spaces, shops and restaurants. The project has been named Seaside.

“From the moment we started talking with Fincantieri, we had in mind to design and build two completely new ships, revolutionary in their structure, unlike anything that exists on the market today,” MSC Cruises executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago says in a statement. With 2,070 cabins, the new ships will carry 4,140 passengers at double occupancy and have room for up to 5,300 passengers including pull-down bunks and pull-out sofas. Scheduled to debut in November 2017 and May 2018, they’ll cost nearly $1 billion a piece.

The deal comes just two months after MSC signed a letter of intent with STX France for two even bigger, 167,000-ton vessels to be delivered in 2017 and 2019.

MSC also has options with STX France for two more of the 167,000 ships, and today’s deal with Fincantieri includes an option for one more of the 154,000-ton ships.

When guitarist Ronnie Wood first toured with the Rolling Stones in 1975 in place of Mick Taylor, who had quit the group in late 1974, he was still officially a member of the Faces. Wood already had history with the band, though, having collaborated with singer Mick Jagger on It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It) and played acoustic guitar on the record. The Faces disbanded in December, and Wood officially joined the Stones the following year.

When Ringo Starr had to be hospitalized for tonsillitis in 1964, the Beatles pulled in session drummer Jimmie Nicol on a day’s notice. He was quickly given a moptop haircut and one of Starr’s suits, and he played his first concert as a temporary Beatle on June 4, 1964. He played a total of eight shows before Starr rejoined the group in Melbourne, Australia.

Axl Rose may have boycotted Guns N’ Roses induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but that didn’t stop the group’s three other founding members — Slash, Duff McKagan and Izzy Spradlin — from going on with the show in 2012.
